In planning for a recent trip to Belize, I discovered a worthwhile program called Pack for a Purpose.
Our destination, the Ka’ana Resort, near San Ignacio, Belize, is a participant in the Pack for a Purpose program.
Pack for a Purpose encourages travelers to devote a small portion of their baggage allowance (as little as 5 pounds) to transporting items needed in destination communities. The Pack for a Purpose website is organized geographically, and directs travelers to lists of specific items needed in various locales worldwide. Resorts, like Ka’ana, partner with Pack for a Purpose to act as clearing houses for guest donations, delivering the goods onward to the ultimate community beneficiaries.
Through Pack for a Purpose, the Ka’ana Resort in Belize gathers supplies for the Succotz Primary School, located a few minutes down the road from the resort. The school serves 360 students between grades 3 and 13 years old. The school’s Pack for a Purpose wish list included school supplies, clothing, shoes, toys and sports equipment.
The Global Gallop team packed, and checked, a twenty-pound bag devoted entirely to items on the Succotz Primary School’s Pack for a Purpose list. Most of the items were purchased economically at a local discount store, and were packed in a low-cost bag which we were happy to leave behind. It was a great feeling to hand over our Pack for a Purpose bag to the staff at the Ka’ana Resort, who in turn, made sure the items would be delivered to the school.
Later during our stay at Ka’ana, we drove by the Succotz Primary School to take a look. It was apparent that the school’s resources were limited. We felt confident that our contributions would be welcomed – and appreciated.
